Electric Car Charger Types

Published on April 22nd, 2021

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity fast. However, many people still do not understand the different electric car charger types. Whether you’re new to EVs or planning a home charger installation, it’s helpful to know the differences between Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 electric car chargers.

This guide will walk you through each charger type, covering charging speed, connector compatibility, installation requirements, and more.

What Are the Three Main Electric Car Charger Types?

EV chargers are typically divided into three categories, each with different power levels and use cases:

  • Type 1 Electric Car Charger – Basic, slow charging (Level 1)
  • Type 2 Electric Car Charger – Standard, faster home or public charging (Level 2)
  • Type 3 Electric Car Charger – DC fast charging for quick top-ups (Level 3)

Type 1 Electric Car Charger (Level 1)

A Type 1 electric car charger uses a standard 120-volt household outlet. It’s the slowest option, but it’s convenient and doesn’t require any special equipment or installation.

Key Specs:

  • Charging Speed: Adds about 3–5 miles of range per hour
  • Power Output: 1.3 – 2.4 kW
  • Connector: SAE J1772 (compatible with most EVs)

Best Use Case:

  • Overnight charging at home
  • Light daily driving needs

Type 2 Electric Car Charger (Level 2)

The Type 2 electric car charger is the most popular option for home and workplace charging. It uses a 240-volt outlet and requires professional installation, but offers significantly faster charging speeds.

Key Specs:

  • Charging Speed: Adds 10–35 miles of range per hour
  • Power Output: 6.2 – 7.6 kW (and up)
  • Connector: SAE J1772

Installation Overview:

Most home installations cost around $2,500 (not including the charger). The final cost depends on:

  • Distance from your electrical panel
  • Whether your panel has enough capacity

If your panel is maxed out, we can install a Demand Charge Control Unit to manage the load and ensure safe charging without upgrading your whole panel.

Best Use Case:

  • Daily home charging
  • Office buildings, parking garages

Type 3 Electric Car Charger (Level 3 / DC Fast Charging)

Level 3 electric car charger (DC fast charger)

A Type 3 electric car charger, also known as a DC Fast Charger, is the fastest and most powerful option. These are primarily found in public charging networks due to their high voltage and infrastructure requirements.

Key Specs:

  • Charging Speed: Adds 100+ miles of range per hour (some provide 200 miles in 15 minutes)
  • Power Output: 24 – 350 kW
  • Connectors: CCS (Combined Charging System), CHAdeMO, and Tesla

Note: Not all EVs are compatible with Level 3 chargers. Be sure to check your vehicle’s specs.

Best Use Case:

  • Highway charging stations
  • Commercial fleets
  • Long-distance travelers

Why Install an Electric Car Charger at Home?

Public charging stations are growing in number, but nothing beats the convenience of home charging, especially with a Type 2 charger. Here’s why:

  • No more waiting in line at public stations
  • Save time every day by charging overnight
  • Cost-effective and energy-efficient
  • Extend battery life with consistent, moderate-speed charging
