A Tesla will connect to their associated wall connector via a proprietary NEMA 14-50 plug. The wall connector charges the vehicle, but the speed at which it does depends on your electrical panel’s capabilities.
The more amperage you have, the quicker your vehicle will charge. For example, a 15 amp circuit breaker offers only 5 to 11 miles of charge per hour. Circuit breakers up to 60 amps support Generation 3 Tesla chargers, which offer (per hour of charge) 30 miles of range for the Model X, 24 miles for the Model S, and 44 miles for the Model 3.
When your circuit breaker is not capable of supporting newer, more efficient charging stations, you can upgrade it as part of your new EV charger installation service.
